I was perusing social media about a month ago, when I saw a post asking for volunteers for a repair cafe. I was immediately interested.
So a repair cafe is an event where people bring their broken stuff to a group of volunteers, who do their best to fix said thing. It’s free, it keeps stuff out of the landfill, and it’s a lot of fun. I got my wife’s boots fixed at the last one, and actually got a sewist to re-attach a button that had fallen off of my shirt on the way to the cafe. It was meant to be.
After seeing the call for volunteers, I sent an email saying I could fix bikes. They got back to me and, long story short, I’m in. I’ll be in Courtenay fixing bikes on Nov. 18 for free. I think you should come down.
Details are below, but the whole event is super cool because it shows how much of our stuff can actually be fixed if we try just a little bit. We’re so disposable these days, learning that things are fixable just helps fight that.
Part of the idea too is that patrons can learn a bit about how to fix their own stuff. I’ll be pretty open when doing my repairs, showing people what I’m doing and teaching them the proper way to do it. I’m looking forward to it.
Details are in the photo below. I hope to see some folks and fix some bikes. If you’re not in Courtenay, go to www.repaircafe.org and you can get one of these going in your town.
