Yesterday I put on my tropical shirt and sandals to ride my cargo bike to the climbing gym, with plans to stop on the community garden on the way home.
Basically I’m living my best life.
The thing that made this all possible was a new acquisition of mine. A 2009 Kona Ute long-tail cargo bike. I found it online for about $400, which seemed like a pretty sweet deal for what’s basically the bike equivalent of a truck. Once some funds came through for me, I messaged the seller and quickly enough was trying to figure out how to fit a long-ass cargo bike in the back of my station wagon.
A few jokes about how I should be carrying the car on my bike instead later and I had it in the driveway.
So it is pretty stock, except for an “upgraded” cruiser seat for some more comfort. Unfortunately, that will be the first thing that goes. It’s so uncomfortable. I also have plans for some bourgeois tires, and some better pedals. But that’s down the road.
From there the plan is to ride it for a while and see what works. I have to get myself some straps and junk so I can make us of the big beautiful wooden cargo rack. So far I have plans to put my new stand up paddleboard on it. Also maybe my wife. And future kids (not yet though). Maybe a camp stove. Maybe my entire camping bin. Did bikepacking just turn into car camping? Maybe it did.
Suffice it to say, I’m stoked.
